SUCCESS STORIES
The project has successfully been implemented in the Chisamba area of Lusaka Province, where it reached 80 children with intellectual and developmental disabilities and about 120 guardians. Of these, 45 children were from the Chisamba Boma area. These interventions have provided crucial support through weekly community workshops, advocacy sessions, and awareness events that have significantly improved the caregiving capacities of parents, guardians and the wider community.
Given the success in Chisamba, there is an urgent need to continue and enhance the EMSC project, particularly in the Chisamba area and across the country. Chisamba is an area with significant challenges in providing adequate support for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The region is marked by limited health facilities, centres and schools that are equipped to accommodate these children, leaving many without access to the specialized care and education they need. Additionally, due to prevalent stigma and widespread ignorance, many children with developmental disabilities are hidden away in their homes, further isolating them from vital resources and opportunities for development.
